Terms and Definitions

PSA (prostate specific antigen)

A protein produced by the prostate gland that is tested to detect or manage prostate cancer

Gleason score

A grading system for prostate cancer that ranges from 6 (low) to 10 (high) and indicates how likely cancer tissue is to spread

Note patients with a 6 or 7 are good candidates for the treatment we offer

FLA (focal laser ablation)

Treatment option that uses MRI and highly targeted laser energy delivered through a catheter to destroy a predefined section of the diseased prostate gland. Also referred to as for laser interstitial thermo therapy (LITT).

Blind biopsy

A biopsy performed by collecting samples of the prostate without great accuracy or reliability, which often means a sampling error

Active Surveillance

The monitoring or “watchful waiting” of low grade prostate cancer that is often selected when a patient has no signs or symptoms
